Carmen was born in Medellin, Colombia and moved to the United States when she was 8 yrs old. She lived in Chicago for 23 years and moved to Arizona in search of heat and sunshine. Carmen knew she would become a nurse after witnessing her father’s heart attack. She felt frustrated at a lack of understanding the lines on the EKG machine and the state of his overall health.
Having graduated from Nursing school, Carmen pursued a specialty in cardiology and worked in the field for eight years. She decided it was time to enhance her career and became a Family Nurse Practitioner. Her love for helping people led her to Integrated Pain Consultants where she truly loves hearing about a patient’s chronic pain and working with them to determine the underlying reason for their pain so that we can heal.
Carmen has been married for 20 yrs and has two little heeler mix puppies. She and her husband enjoy eating, trying new restaurants, traveling, and spending time with their family.
Sandy received her undergraduate degree from Alfred University in NY, followed by her Masters in Nursing and Nurse Practitioner degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1992. She has been accredited through the American Nurses Credentialing Center in Pain Management since 2008. She successfully completed and obtained recognition as Fellow through the Academy of Integrated Pain Management 2014.
She previously owned Arizona Pain Institute providing quality pro-active safe, effective medication management care to patients with chronic, debilitating pain. Her dedication to her patients and the advancement of the Pain Management discipline can be readily seen through her continuous efforts to maintain high standards of care and education for herself.
Sandy actively participates in numerous continuing education programs, opportunities, and speaking engagements; as well, she continues to cultivate and implement patient safety classes, teaching tools, and staff development. She has spoken at both the local and National levels educating others on issues relating to patient care safety, she is also a past member of the Arizona Board of Nursing’s Advanced Practice Committee, writing and reviewing Opinion Statements for standards of care.
When not with her patients, Sandy enjoys spending her time with family, hiking, reading, gardening and trying new recipes.
Sarah earned her MSN from the University of Cincinnati and began her career as a Family Nurse Practitioner at the Presidio of Monterey Army Health Clinic. Here, Sarah found her passion for helping patients suffering from both acute and chronic pain. She became very experienced caring for active duty military members that were expected to continue their training and helped them heal and prepare for duty. During this time, treatments were designed to be both therapeutic and restorative which allowed each person to function at a very high level given the demands of their jobs.
Sarah firmly believes that each patient has a different story that is invaluable to their experience as a patient. She loves spending time with her patients to find a comprehensive care plan that can help each have a better quality of life. Sarah believes that interventions are key to guiding people to a path where their lives are more comfortable and enjoyable.
Before joining Integrated Pain Consultants, Sarah volunteered as an FNP at Brian Allgood Army Community Hospital in Seoul, South Korea. She loves spending her free time with her two children, reading, and enjoying the beauty that Arizona has to offer. Additionally, Sarah enjoys hiking and writing in her spare time.
Shaun Hampton received his MSN from the University Mary Hardin-Baylor and graduated with the highest honors. Having grown up in Texas, Shaun moved to Arizona over two years ago and is enjoying his time exploring the many outdoor activities Arizona has to offer.
With a background in emergency medicine, Shaun’s passion resides in teaching patients and educating them on the many options to prevent injury and pain. Moreover, Shaun feels exercise and staying active is a significant factor in overall health maintenance.
When not working, Shaun loves to be outdoors, hiking mountains, and has a passion for fitness and training. He also volunteers at animal shelters in his free time.
Nurse practitioner (NP) and psychiatric nurse practitioner (PNP), Gene Hutsell started his career after receiving his BSN at the Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. He was a licensed nurse practitioner (LPN) before focusing on mental health and receiving his master’s in nursing. In his early career, Hutsell served as an RN supervisor at a hospital’s psychiatric unit, where he was encouraged to enroll in the hospital’s Psychiatric Nursing Program.
Upon receiving his advanced degree in nursing, Hutsell was accredited through the ANCC for Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health. His career has allowed him to work in a variety of clinics and fields where he always puts the patient’s overall health first. Mental health is a critical aspect of holistic health, and is paramount to Integrated Pain Consultant’s value system. When he’s not at work, Hutsell enjoys classic movies and dinner dates with his wife.
Emily, an Arizona native, started her healthcare career over 15 years ago. She began her career at John C. Lincoln where she worked while she obtained her RN degree. After working on many mass casualty incident preparation drills and research projects in the emergency room, she became interested in furthering her education and went on to earn her Master’s Degree as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner through Grand Canyon University. While in school, she was injured in an ATV accident which sparked her interest in interventional pain management. Upon graduation, she began as a provider of Pain Management in order to offer patients the same care and treatment that helped her during her recovering.
While not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children. Emily is currently attending Grand Canyon University in pursuit of her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree.
Julie Taylor-Zafuto (Snyder) stands in the forefront of medical care, with over 25 years of experience in a fast-changing climate she continues to epitomize patient care. As a highly sought-after Nurse Practitioner currently in the field of Pain Management and Addiction, Julie holds high accolades for many additional areas of specialty. Julie is a Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners with multiple areas of specialty. Additionally, Julie has additional training as a First Assistant in the Operating Room.
Julie completed her Bachelors at the University of Washington in Seattle, with a Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis in Nursing Science achieving Magna Cum Laude. Julie then enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Officer and was promptly deployed to the Middle East for Operation Desert Storm where she earned over 25 awards or commendations during her time in service. Julie has a strong academic background with three Masters Degrees and is completing her Doctorate in Nursing Practice which makes her expert in medical practice and contributes to the growing body of research and leadership. Julie is a thoughtful, open and straight-forward Practitioner who has a passion for providing long-lasting and trusting relationships with her patients and customers. She continues to provide comprehensive evaluations by listening and understanding the patient’s needs. It continues to be her mission to enhance the Patient / Provider experience and outcomes.
Julie is an active member in several professional organizations which includes American Academy of Nurse Practitioner; Sigma Theta, Tau, The International Honor Society of Nursing, American Society of Pain Management, American Society of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgical Nurses and Emergency Nurses Association.
Away from the practice, you will find Julie and her family enjoying the Arizona outdoors or find her enjoying the surf, sand and ocean breeze somewhere around the world.
Erik Wagner, NP as raised in Yonkers, New York. He pursued his undergraduate degree at Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York where he studied accounting and finance. However, Wagner soon realized his passion for patient care and attended the prestigious Life University School of Chiropractic in Georgia where he earned his Doctorate in Chiropractic. During his graduate studies, Wagner began
Wagner returned to New York after completing his doctoral studies and began practicing chiropractic care. This passion sustained him for a decade before he returned to school to pursue his nursing degree. Wagner attended Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama where he graduated with honors with an MSN as a nurse practitioner (NP). This degree was followed by eight years of practice in the East Valley where he offered a diverse range of care options to patients. He is committed to helping every patient achieve their goals, and is highly skilled in a variety of extremity injections including the knees, shoulders, hips, and spine. Part of Wagner’s approach is educating patients on their options for injections, which can range from platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stem cell injections. When he’s not in the clinic, Wagner likes cycling and weight lifting, spending time with his family—and, as a foodie, eating.
Angus Walker began his nursing career with a BSN from Tarleton State University. And with a background in emergency medicine, Angus was naturally drawn to patient education and assisting actively with patient care. Six years later, with a lot of determination and support, Angus earned his MSN at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2017.
As an athlete, Angus knows the damage that sports injuries and surgeries can have on a life. This is why he is drawn to treating chronic pain for Integrated Pain Consultants today. Being able to relate to patients who experience constant discomfort is what he finds essential to connecting to a patient in pain and his or her desire to overcome chronic pain. “I heavily believe in Bandura’s Self Efficacy Theory. Having my patients actively take part in their plan of care is vital to overcoming adversity and improving their overall quality of life”.
Outside of work, Angus enjoys spending time with his family and staying physically active. They enjoy hiking, biking, playing board games, and swimming.
