Back pain is the leading cause of disability in the United States, which is why Dr. Nikesh Seth offers a wide variety of back pain solutions that range from conservative and non-invasive to unique alternative therapies such as kyphoplasty for fractured spines. Lumbar pain, or lower back pain, is particularly common and Integrated Pain Consultants features a number of treatment options for this common ailment. As a person ages or carries more weight, their odds of experiencing back pain increases. This pain can be acute or chronic, but know that help is available.

SOME OF THE MOST COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAUSE BACK PAIN INCLUDE:

  • Degenerative disc disease

Most people will experience some degree of degenerative disc disease as they get older. The discs between the vertebrae act as “shock absorbers,” and these discs can wear out with time, heavy use, or when a person is carrying excess weight. As these discs become less lubricated and worn out, they stop being as effective as shock absorbers, which can lead to back pain.

  • Radicular pain

When pain radiates to the lower extremities via the spinal nerve root, it’s called radicular pain. It is usually caused by inflammation, spinal nerve injuries, or compression in the spine. Radicular pain is a common complement to herniated discs, peridural fibrosis, and other spine conditions.

  • Facet joint arthritis

There are dozens of types of arthritis, and some—such as facet joint arthritis—can affect the back. Facet joints are found in the spine. Facet joint arthritis is caused by inflammation, and controlling that inflammation reduces pain. Facet joint arthritis is treatable, but it’s important to choose a treatment that addresses chronic conditions in a safe manner.

  • Compression fractures

When part of the spine is fractured from compression, the pain can be severe. Compression fractures can happen seemingly at random, but are more often caused by trauma, injury, or illness. Those who have physically demanding jobs are at a higher risk of compression fractures. Kyphoplasty is a highly effective alternative treatment, which uses a special spinal “cement” to reinforce the spine and address the compression fracture.

  • Bulging discs

Bulging discs can be a precursor to a displaced disc. The discs in the vertebrae can “bulge” out of their casing due to age, excess weight, heavy lifting, or trauma. Pain is elicited when this occurs, and although the degree of pain varies from person to person, it is important to treat bulging discs (and the pain) immediately to avoid more serious damage.
