When joints hurt, Dr. Nikesh Seth knows there might be a number of causes and factors. Pinpointing the cause of any pain is key to creating a customized solution for pain management and relief. Simply “treating the pain” with dangerous tools such as opioids is irresponsible and risky for the patient. Instead, determining the cause and degree of injury or disease should be the first step.

Here are five common joint pain conditions treatable by Dr. Seth:

1. Osteoarthritis (OA). This is the most common type of arthritis, and it often develops with age. Cartilage breaks down as we get older, but it’s the only cushion between bones and joints. OA is most common in the hands, lower back, knees, hips, and neck. OA progresses from a non-inflammatory type of arthritis to inflammatory erosive OA.

2. Gout. Technically, gout is also a type of inflammatory arthritis. It’s common in people with high amounts of uric acid. This acid creates crystals in joints, usually in the feet and knees. Gout attacks can be debilitating and cause extreme swelling.

3. Pseudogout. Also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, this inflammatory arthritis happens due to calcium crystals in the joints. It’s similar to gout when it comes to the extreme pain, but it can last even longer if not treated. It can also occur in areas besides the feet and knees.

4. Septic arthritis. Joints can become infected, usually with a bacterium (but sometimes with a fungus). When this happens, it’s called septic arthritis. A stiff, swollen, warm joint accompanied by a fever is common.

5. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This chronic autoimmune condition usually develops over several weeks or months. It mostly affects the joints and is coupled with muscle pain, fevers, fatigue, and weight loss.
