Dr. Nikesh Seth is one of the few doctors who offer Suboxone Therapy, which can be part of an opioid addiction treatment plan to help curb the discomfort that accompanies withdrawal symptoms. Suboxone is a type of opioid that has a “partial agonist,” which means it’s much less likely to cause dependency compared to the “full agonist” methadone. However, a recent study from the Harvard Chan School of Public Health reveals that it can be very difficult for patients to find doctors and clinics that offer Suboxone Therapy.

The researchers went undercover as patients in six states with high opioid overdose rates. When they went to clinics that advertised Suboxone Therapy, half of them said they weren’t taking patients, and the other half said there was a significant wait period. According to one researcher, “The majority of physicians were able to offer an appointment within less than a week, but addiction is a condition where we want to strike while the iron’s hot. If somebody wants treatment, the best time to offer is, you know, now.” At Integrated Pain Consultants, you don’t have to wait for an appointment for Suboxone Therapy.

Some of the reasons the researchers found there was a long wait period were because not very many doctors had the requisite training for offering Suboxone Therapy, and some clinics simply didn’t want to treat patients with addiction. The full study can be found in the article “Access to Office-Based Buprenorphine Treatment in Areas with High Rates of Opioid-Related Mortality: An Audit Study” by Tamara Beetham et. al.
