Pain is how your body tells you something’s wrong, and a pain management center is where you can find relief. Dr. Nikesh Seth at Integrated Pain Consultants has been voted Top Doc in the area every year since 2015, and was named Top Doc in Pain Management in 2019 as voted by his peers. This pain management clinic treats every type of pain, including the most common pain sites like the back.

Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor and miss work. It’s the leading cause of disability around the world. This type of pain can include muscle aches, pain that gets better when you recline, pain that radiates down the limbs, pain that gets worse with certain movements (like standing or lifting), and is often described as a shooting or stabbing sensation.

Considering how complex the spine is, it’s no surprise that the degree of back pain can vary. There are multiple potential causes for back pain, starting with a muscle or ligament strain. Strains can be caused by sudden movements or heavy lifting. Bulging or ruptured disks are also common causes of back pain, and happen when the soft tissue between the vertebrae becomes pinched or ruptured.

Arthritis can affect the back, especially osteoarthritis or OA. Sometimes arthritis can cause a narrowing of the spinal cord called “spinal stenosis.” There are also certain types of skeletal irregularities, like scoliosis, that cause pain, and osteoporosis can also play a role. The latter happens when bones get brittle and porous, which can be caused by age, medications, and some diseases. Fortunately, there are many options for back pain management depending on the cause, including joint injections and CBD topical treatments.

Neck Pain

The neck is part of the spine, but the causes and symptoms of neck pain can differ from back pain. Also known as cervical pain, some of the most common causes of neck pain include strains, cervical spondylosis, and degenerative disk disease, as well as injuries like whiplash and simply poor posture. A lifestyle that includes hunching over screens can be particularly troublesome and cause neck pain.

Neck pain can also be caused by infections like a virus in the throat that causes swelling of the lymph nodes. Rare infections like meningitis and tuberculosis have also been known to cause neck pain. From fibromyalgia to polymyalgia rheumatica, there are nearly endless causes of neck pain and getting a correct diagnosis is the key to a treatment that will work.

Neck pain is often described as a dull ache that gets worse with movement. You might also notice a stiff neck, headache, or tenderness. This type of pain can also radiate and cause a tingling or weakness in the arms. Considering that there are seven vertebrae in the neck along with disks and nerves, muscles and arteries, and a host of other anatomical parts making up this mobile area, there is plenty of opportunity for neck pain to occur.

Joint Pain

Joints are where bones meet, and joint pain refers to any type of pain, soreness, or ache in the area. Joint pain might be caused by an injury or illness, or a disorder like arthritis. Arthritis is one of the most common causes of joint pain, particularly osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). OA is most common in those over 40 and usually affects the wrists, hands, knees, or hips. OA is caused by cartilage breakdown that causes bones to lose the cushion between them. RA is caused by the body’s immune system attacking and destroying the cartilage.

However, joint pain might also be caused by bursitis, gout, tendinitis, lupus, bone infections, or an injury. Overusing a joint, such as via texting or playing a certain sport, can also cause joint pain. In addition to pain, you might notice a fever without any other flu symptoms or that the joint is tender, swollen, or red.

Nerve Pain

Nerve pain is a sign of an issue with the central nervous system or with the nerves of the muscles and organs. Usually, nerve pain is caused by injury or a disease. When a nerve is pinched, such as with sciatica or carpal tunnel syndrome, pain occurs. You might also notice nerve pain if there’s subpar blood supply to the nerves, with certain vitamin deficiencies like B12, after a stroke, or due to multiple sclerosis.

Three of the most common causes of nerve pain include sciatica, fibromyalgia, and peripheral neuropathy. Sciatica happens when the nerves on the lower back face pressure. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain lacking a well-understood cause. Peripheral neuropathy happens when peripheral nerves are damaged, such as by diabetes or an autoimmune disease.
