Most cases of neuropathy, or nerve damage, in America, are “idiopathic.” This means there’s no known cause. The experts at Integrated Pain Consultants specialize in treating nerve pain related to all types of neuropathy, including motor neuropathy and diabetic neuropathy. These two types of nerve damage are the most common outside idiopathic and require different types of pain management. WHAT IS MOTOR NEUROPATHY

Motor neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that affects the muscles. Common symptoms include muscle weakness, which can present as challenges when performing little movements like zipping up a jacket. It can also cause unsteadiness and a seemingly sudden lack of balance. This side effect is particularly troublesome to those who pride themselves on fitness.

Muscle wasting is another common side effect. For older patients, this can be misinterpreted as sarcopenia, or natural loss of muscle mass due to aging. You may also experience an increase in cramps or muscle twitches. There is also muscle paralysis, which may be chronic or may come and go. In some cases, the autonomic nerves can also be impacted leading to problems with heat tolerance, sweating, sudden changes in blood pressure, and dizziness. Bladder/bowel issues may also be present.

Motor neuropathy treatments can vary widely. Depending on where the motor neuropathy is within the body, spinal cord stimulation may also be recommended. Since motor neuropathy can be a lifelong condition, it’s important to put conservative, alternative therapies first.

DIABETIC NEUROPATHY

A number of diseases can also cause nerve pain, but diabetes is the most common condition behind peripheral neuropathy. High blood sugar levels are capable of damaging nerves. Other conditions may include chronic kidney disease, infections such as Lyme disease, Guillain-Barre syndrome, traumatic injuries that put pressure on nerves, vitamin deficiencies, and autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis.

However, if you have diabetes, around 65 percent of diabetes patients have some amount of neuropathy. In America, diabetic neuropathy is the primary cause of pressure ulcers and foot problems.
