There are various types of arthritis, and it is one of the most common complaints “Top Doc in Pain Management” Dr. Nikesh Seth treats at Integrated Pain Consultants. Different types of arthritis can affect the body in different ways, including symmetrically or asymmetrically. As you likely guessed, symmetric arthritis occurs when the joints on both sides are affected. For example, maybe you have arthritis in both knees. Asymmetric arthritis happens when only one side of the body has arthritis.

Understanding Your Arthritis

Symmetry and asymmetry are just two characteristics of arthritis. You also need to consider if arthritis has an inflammatory cause or non-inflammatory cause. Inflammatory arthritis is caused by an underlying problem, like an autoimmune issue. Non-inflammatory arthritis is caused by a trauma like an injury or simply wear and tear. There’s also rheumatoid arthritis (inflammatory), and it is almost always a symmetrical type of arthritis. However, this type of arthritis can be tricky because it may not start symmetrically.

Osteoarthritis is a non-inflammatory type of arthritis from wear and tear, and usually produces asymmetrical symptoms. For example, if you use a hammer with your right hand for several years as a carpenter, you might experience osteoarthritis in just the right hand. Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory kind of arthritis that can produce symmetrical or asymmetrical symptoms.

These are just a few examples of the types of arthritis that can happen and how they usually present in terms of symmetry. Properly identifying the type of arthritis (and in some cases the cause) is key to customizing a treatment. There are a variety of non-invasive options, including manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) which allows the body to be “manipulated” by an expert while the patient is under anesthesia and unable to “tense up” (which can interfere with treatment). CBD is another popular approach, especially when it comes to applying it topically.
