The Arthritis Foundation reports that 54 million adults have been diagnosed with arthritis in the US, and Integrated Pain Consultant’s board certified pain management expert Dr. Nikesh Seth routinely works with patients to ease the symptoms of this debilitating disease. There are multiple types of arthritis, and it’s not reserved only for adults. Around 300,000 children have either arthritis or a rheumatic condition, although the most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. About 31 million Americans are currently diagnosed with this common type.

ARTHRITIS AND PAIN MANAGEMENT

According to statistics, about 78 million people will be diagnosed with arthritis by 2040. Women are diagnosed more often than men, especially with certain types of arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis. The majority of adults diagnosed with arthritis are working-age (between 18 – 64 years old), which means the disease impacts their career and ability to earn wages. Arthritis ranks as one of the top five costliest conditions for adults.

Arthritis is also a common co-morbidity, meaning it’s regularly found accompanying other conditions. Nearly half of adults with heart disease also have arthritis. Almost half of those diagnosed with diabetes also have arthritis, and one-third of adults who are obese are also arthritic. Fortunately, there are alternative therapies to help treat arthritis-related pain that let you avoid prescription drugs like opioids (which can be addictive). Opioids are best used for short-term conditions, unlike arthritis which is a chronic condition.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS FOR ARTHRITIS

The type of alternative treatment depends on the type of arthritis and its location. For instance, osteoarthritis in the shoulder may be treated with joint injections, and/or viscosupplementation. Face joint arthritis patients may benefit from radiofrequency ablationspinal cord stimulation, or any of the treatments related with osteoarthritis in the shoulder. Treatment plans are as unique as the patient, but the goal is safe and effective pain management.
